Q1: Am I eligible to apply to GC?
A1: You may apply to GC if you meet one of the following criteria:
i) International students may apply through the GC application process Applying to GC.
ii) If you are a non-Chinese citizen holding a foreign passport and one or both of your parents are (were) Chinese citizens, please review the relevant regulations issued by the Ministry of Education of China: http://www.moe.gov.cn/srcsite/A20/moe_850/202006/t20200609_464159.html

    Q2: Is TOEFL or IELTS required for an international student?
    A2: International applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate English proficiency by submitting either a TOEFL iBT or IELTS score.
    TOEFL iBT
    1. For tests taken before January 2026: a minimum score of 90 is required.
    2. For tests taken in January 2026 or later: a minimum score of 4.5 is required, with a recommended score of 5.0.
    3. Please request your official score report through ETS using GC’s institution code: 6210.
    IELTS Academic
    1. A minimum overall score of 6.0 is required.
    *Please note that English proficiency certificates or Medium of Instruction (MOI) letters issued by high schools are not accepted.
    Exceptions: Applicants may be exempt from submitting TOEFL or IELTS scores if they meet any one of the following conditions:
    • Achieve a SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 650 or above;
    • Achieve both ACT Reading and English scores of 27 or above;
    • Have recently completed at least four years of rigorous academic study in one of the following countries/regions：Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Eswatini, Fiji, The Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States (except Puerto Rico), United States Virgin Islands, Zambia, Zimbabwe；
    • Have recently completed at least four years of rigorous academic study at an American or British international school abroad.
    Q3: Is SAT or ACT required?
    A3: The SAT or ACT is not required for admission. However, applicants are required to submit a score from the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA), including the Mathematics section in English. Students who have taken the SAT or ACT are encouraged to submit their scores for additional consideration as part of the application review process.
    Q4: When will admission decisions be released?
    A4: Admission decisions for Fall Early Action applicants will be released by January 31 for applications submitted by the November 1 deadline. Admission decisions for Fall Regular Decision applicants will be released by June 30 for applications submitted by the March 31 deadline.
    Q5: When can I apply for a visa and complete the physical examination?
    A5: Once you receive your admission package, including the JW202 form, you may begin the visa application process. For visa-related questions, please contact your local Chinese embassy or consulate, or reach out to isc.d@sjtu.edu.cn. While we are happy to provide general guidance, visa requirements and procedures are determined by the relevant authorities.

    Q6: Do I need to live on campus, or can I choose off-campus housing?
    A6: International students are not required to live on campus and may choose from the following housing options:
    i) SJTU International Student Residence Halls Students who choose to live in the university residence halls should follow the housing registration instructions provided with their official admission letter.
    ii）Off-campus Housing Students who choose to live off campus are responsible for arranging their own accommodation. After moving into off-campus housing, students must complete residential registration at the local police station as required by Chinese regulations. This registration is also required for maintaining valid visa documentation.
    Q7: When can freshmen begin selecting courses?
    A7: During the orientation week, students will receive guidance from the Undergraduate Education Office staff and faculty members in their academic programs to plan and finalize their course schedules.
    Q8: Can I receive credit for AP or IB courses?

    Q9: How can I learn more about International Programs or the Joint Undergraduate Master Program (JUMP)?

    Q10: What topics will be covered in the mathematics placement test?
    A10: No special preparation is required for the mathematics placement test. The purpose of the test is to help GC mathematics faculty understand students’ prior learning and determine their appropriate course placement based on their high school mathematics background.
    Q11: How can I apply for the SJTU International New Students Scholarship?
    A11: No separate application is required for the SJTU International New Students Scholarship. Scholarship recipients are selected by the scholarship committee, and decisions will be communicated together with admission offers. Additional scholarship opportunities offered by Global College and SJTU may also be available to eligible GC students. Detailed information about these opportunities will be provided during the academic year.
