Abstract
Optical fiber biosensors are excellent tools for real-time detection of biomolecules in analytes such as blood, serum, sweat, urine, saliva. The use of single-mode fibers provides a significant increment to the biological performances: thanks to the high propagation quality and mode stability, we can fabricate devices that (although not highly sensitive) have excellent biological detection limits and response. In this work, we focus on devices having simple fabrication, characterized by few steps: reflector-less sensors, ball resonators, and semi-distributed interferometers. All these devices can be fabricated in few steps, and biofunctionalized using thin metallic film sputtering or silanization, and selecting bioreceptors that perform a specific biorecognition. We discuss some applications, involving the detection of cancer biomarkers, viral particle detection, cells sensing, and the exploration of new analytes such as tears or saliva.
Biography
Dr. Daniele Tosi is a Full Professor at Nazarbayev University, School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, and Head of Biosensors and Bioinstruments Laboratory at National Laboratory Astana. He holds a PhD in Electronic and Communication Engineering at Politecnico di Torino (Italy, 2010) and BSc/MSc in Telecommunication Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. His research interest include optical fiber sensors, in particular for biomedical applications, optical biosensors, distributed sensors, and optical fiber propagation. He is the recipient of several awards, including IEEE Early Career Award in 2018, and fellowships including Fulbright and Endeavour. He is Associate Editor of IEEE Sensors Journal, IEEE Sensors Reviews, and Biomedical Optics Express.
