Honorable Professor

John Hopcroft
- Turing Award Laureate
- Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
John Hopcroft has long been engaged in theoretical computer science research. In recognition of his foundational contributions to the design and analysis of algorithms and data structures, he was awarded the Turing Award in 1986, the highest honor in computer science. Several of his doctoral students have been elected as academicians of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other countries, and two of them have received the Turing Award—Alfred Aho, the 2020 Turing Award recipient, and Gilles Brassard, the 2025 Turing Award recipient.
Since 2011, at the invitation of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of China, Hopcroft has carried out international research collaboration and cultivated top-tier computer science talent at Chinese universities as a high-level academic master. In 2016, he was awarded the Chinese Government Friendship Award, the highest honor for foreign experts in China. In 2021, he was appointed as a member of the Expert Committee of the Ministry of Education’s pilot program for undergraduate education and teaching reform in computer science (the “101 Plan”), and he advocated and promoted the plan at the national level. In 2024, Hopcroft was awarded the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People’s Republic of China.
