Sargis Karapetyan, a 19-year-old engineering student at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Global College (SJTUGC, abbreviated as GC), is passionate about science, technology, and innovation. Originally from Yerevan, capital city of Armenia, Sargis grew up with a deep appreciation for civilizations with strong cultural legacies, which naturally extended to his interest in China.

Sargis showed a strong aptitude for mathematics and natural sciences from an early age. In Armenia, he achieved top placements in several national mathematics competitions. Outside the classroom, he participated in STEM projects in robotics, further developing his interest in engineering, design, and innovation.

Sargis’ relationship with China began way before his university life. He began learning Chinese four years ago and became actively involved in the Armenian-Chinese community, where he helped organize multiple cultural exchange events and Mandarin masterclasses. This connection played a major role in his decision to study at SJTU. As Sargis himself reflects, over the years, China and its culture have become deeply personal to him, so much that he now considers Shanghai his other home. Such a connection also inspired him to guide younger Armenian students to choose education in China, reaching a whole new level of cooperation between the Armenian and Chinese education systems.

Now in his sophomore year at GC, Sargis is majoring in Mechanical Engineering. His coursework includes subjects such as thermodynamics and machine building. Recently, he joined a research project led by Professor David Hung focusing on predicting cooling characteristics using machine learning algorithms. Much of his time is spent in the Long Bin Building, where he collects experimental data, works on laboratory equipment, and prepares for his coursework.

Beyond academics, Sargis is also active in musical performances and photography. He frequently participates in university outreach and introduction events, sharing his experiences with prospective students. He sees this as an opportunity to give back to the university that has supported him with a first-class scholarship and to assist future students interested in studying at SJTU.

Guided by the principle that “whatever is worth doing is worth doing well,” Sargis continues to pursue his academic and personal goals with dedication. Through his studies and cross-cultural experiences, he hopes to contribute to technological innovation and international collaboration in the years ahead.
