Shanghai Jiao Tong University Global College (SJTUGC, abbreviated as GC hereafter) appointed Sherman Shen as the college’s first Honorable Professor during a ceremony held on May 8 as part of the seventh Longbin Distinguished Seminar at the CIMC Auditorium of the Long Bin Building. Sherman Shen, the keynote speaker of the seminar, delivered an academic lecture titled “AI Empowering Research, Teaching, and Administration in Higher Education.”

GC’s Deputy Party Secretary and Associate Dean for Research Yanfeng Shen hosts the seminar.

As Distinguished Professor at the University of Waterloo, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, International Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and International Fellow of the Engineering Academy of Japan, Sherman Shen has received numerous internationally recognized honors, including the IEEE Canada A.G.L. McNaughton Gold Medal and the Canadian Award for Telecommunications Research. He has also served as President of the IEEE Communications Society and chaired multiple leading international academic conferences.

During the lecture, Sherman Shen discussed how AI technologies are reshaping higher education through advances in scientific research, personalized teaching, and intelligent administration. He explained that AI can identify patterns from massive datasets, support experimental design, and accelerate scientific innovation. Intelligent tutoring systems and learning analytics tools can facilitate large-scale personalized education, while AI-powered resource allocation, risk assessment, and decision-making systems can further improve the efficiency and quality of university administration.

Following the lecture, GC faculty members and students engaged in discussions on topics including educational ethics in the era of large language models, the boundaries of AI-assisted scientific research, and the reliability of intelligent decision-making systems. Sherman Shen responded to questions from the audience and shared his insights on the future development of AI-enabled higher education.

GC Dean Hesheng Wang and Chairman of the GC Council Haojin Zhu present Sherman Shen with a certificate of appreciation.

An appointment ceremony was then held, during which Dean Hesheng Wang formally presented Sherman Shen with a certificate appointing him as GC’s first Honorable Professor. The appointment represents an important step in GC’s efforts to further strengthen global academic collaboration, gather international intellectual resources, and advance frontier research and industry-education integration, said the dean.
