The President of the University of Michigan, Mary Sue Coleman, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The two universities signed the Agreement on Establishing the UM-SJTU Joint Institute.

2006/4

UM-SJTU Joint Institute was officially founded with the plaque unveiled.

2006/9

With the enrollment of the first 196 undergraduates, University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute embarked on its international talents cultivation.

2010/3

JI was awarded the sixth National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education by Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.

2010/5

The first Dual Degree undergraduates graduated from University of Michigan.

2010/8

The first UM-SJTU Joint Institute undergraduates graduated from SJTU.

2011/12

JI was recognized by Chinese government as National Model of Higher Education Reform

2012/4

JI was awarded the first model institute of Sino-foreign cooperative education by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission in Shanghai.

2012/6

Shanghai Jiao Tong University and University of Michigan signed a ten-year agreement on continuing the development of UM-SJTU Joint Institute.

2014/3

UM-SJTU Joint Institute became the first Chinese educational institute winning Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education presented by the Institute of International Education.

2016/4

JI Alumni Association was officially established.

2016/8

Mechanical Engineering program and Electrical and Computer Engineering program of UM-SJTU Joint Institute were accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology(ABET).

2018/5

The UM-SJTU Joint Institute held the opening ceremony of Long Bin Building. Shanghai Jiao Tong University and University of Michigan signed the second ten-year agreements.

2019/8

The tenth batch of undergraduates graduated from UM-SJTU Joint Institute.

2022/6

The Mechanical Engineering、Electrical and Computer Engineering and Material Science and Engineering programs of JI gained national first-class accreditation.

2022/11

JI established Everflow Fund and JI Student Leadership Program.

SJTU inaugurates Tang Junyuan Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at JI

For the second time, JI received First Prize of China’s National Teaching Achievement Award.

The United States Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns visited JI and SJTU during a trip to Shanghai meeting with business, government and academic leaders.

2024/10

JI hosted the 10th meeting of the China-Foreign Joint Education Conference.

2025/4

JI inaugurated the Longbin Distinguished Seminar Series, featuring Professor Karl Henrik Johansson, Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, as the first keynote speaker.

A delegation from Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University led by President Ho Teck Hua visited JI.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University Global College (abbreviated as GC), upgraded from JI, held its 2025 new student welcome ceremony.

2025/10

GC signed a Global Degree Pathways program agreement with the University of Waterloo at Long Bin Building.

Dali Chen, Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education, led a delegation to GC to review the college’s educational programs and provide guidance on its transitional development.

Youqun Ren, Member of the CPC Leading Group and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, led a delegation to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to conduct a research visit and hear a briefing on GC’s practices in internationalized education and the cultivation of globally oriented innovative talents.

GC signed a cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Engineering, The University of Hong Kong, to jointly establish a bachelor-to-doctor program, the first of its kind under GC’s Global Degree Pathway (GDP) program.

SJTU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Waterloo on cooperation covering multiple education models, including undergraduate dual-degree (2+2) program, graduate program, dual master’s program, and jointly supervised doctoral program.

GC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese University of Hong Kong to jointly launch integrated bachelor-to-doctor programs under the Global Degree Pathways initiative.
